Most people want a simple universe
that runs to common sense and rules of thumb;
a god with common sense to rule the same,
to order Chaos and reward the just –
then chafe and puzzle that it is not so,
and life’s enigmas pile up unresolved.
Kurt Gödel proved that what cannot be proved
need not be held untrue, while Heisenberg
most famously stood firm on Either/Or
when asked if light were particle or wave;
with charm and roguish humour Escher drew
us in and teased the seeing our sight.
Though sight and reason guide us as they may,
vertiginous Unknowing is our lot;
this life may be a sadist’s dismal joke
and spiral into Chaos and Despair;
yet hope and wonder draw me to explore
and tease the wisdom from Unknowing’s core.
