St. Andrew's Eve 1984

The Rev. John Fairbrother

St. Andrew's Eve 1984

Dawn of an era’s end cast light
shadow over reflective
triumph
               confidence
                              hope
yet to stumble at harvesting
enlightenment’s long birth

The dossal untorn before
revelation becoming
crumbling
            dust
                          swept
unnoticed along terrazzo
way under vestment suit and gown

Unlike liberty’s relic no crack
distressed the ringers’ sounds
falling
              from tower
                           to town
beckoning eternity above solemn
song, entreaty, pledge and prayer

Looking for marks of hands and feet
words abating doubt amid
compassion
               anger
                             greed
a fragile film between deep and grip
bearing approach to source of Word

The sky has not split asunder
the earth remains beneath our feet
shifting
              questioning
                           the imprint
of each moment within
the compass of each day
