Runga ake Hukanui

The Rev. John Fairbrother

Runga ake Hukanui

This host, this cosmic gift,
energy, mass becoming form:
Life, drawing sustenance,
knowing pain, struggling to repel
attraction enthralled with death.

Leaving reach of caldera-lake
Taupo spills Pacific plenty across
volcanic form, shaping land that
life may flourish where creative
destruction reveals Hades' well.

The force is frightening, crashing
beneath our feet more secure
than heads leaning over
the edge of safety defined
by mesh and frame.

Trusting barrier and bridge,
hoping waters constrain
deep threat of molten core:
Communities fearing earth
will not remain compliant, still.

Indifferent planet bearing no fear-
apart from lives competing-
within forces creating the home
we know.  We, unlike yet as a virus,
drawing succour from the host.
