Continuity

The Rev. John Fairbrother

A swerve of chance became
an inevitable form:
Gift, trial, unfathomable,
living and dying
into each day.

Awaking, a home assembled
by entropy’s companion
cycling life and death,
inhabiting alone,
needing any who call.

Accident of birth, circumstance
prevailing, coincidence of faith:
All conspire to shape the host
who may, or not, understand
how chance pays the rent.

At landlord’s return,
when silence arrives
floors bear no weight,
chance will swerve
presenting an inevitable form.
