Soul and Mind

The Rev. John Fairbrother

Soul and Mind

Thinking, like
Silent resistant wind:
Unsettling,
Unbinding waves to
Swallow deadening force that
May flounder
Here.

Listening for
Earth's murmur drawing soulful
Loving, longing hope and fear.
Need tragedy, pain and blood,
Destroy hope
Here?

Seeing now
Calm's descent, clearing anxiety's stage:
Hope lowers tragedy
Rendering recurrent cross
To mythic form, bequeathing
Silence, the irenic way.

Silence,
Silence, stillness, silence:
Frightening quiet
Held Imperial Titus, Mary (even me)
Baring soul and mind within
Empty Holy room,
Vacant tomb.
